"Are you Chinese?"
"No. I am Korean."
He Turns to look at me.
"Are..you Chinese?"
"Yes.."
Commence Rapid Mandarin.
Crap.
A group of Chinese Elders came up to me on the bus stop to ask for help on their English. A Nice man asked me in Mandarin which of the three sentences were most correct:
Doesnt He Come.
He doesnt come now.
He Doesnt now come.
I proceeded to speak in slowly in Mandarin.
"None of them are correct. If you want to say He is not coming now, it is 'He is not coming'".
"Ok Xie Xie."
On the bus he asks me: "Can I say 'he is not come?'"
"No, if you want to say he is not coming 'NOW' you say 'comING' not come."
After, I had to explain in broken Mandarin that I actually speak Cantonese and that I was just Learning Mandarin. He thought I was from Hong Kong but that led to me having to further explain in broken Mandarin that my father was from Hong Kong and that I was born in California.
Ahh, this encounter reminds me of APALI. I miss you guys.
